Pinoy Weekly - Sectoral groups mount relief efforts for communities affected by heavy monsoon, typhoon rains

Immediate help is needed.


Large parts of Luzon in the Philippines are now experiencing heavy flooding caused by torrential monsoon rains, intensified by tropical storm “Maring”. And while local and national government agencies launch rescue, evacuation and relief operations for many provinces in Northern and Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, Southern Luzon and Metro Manila, help eludes still a larger number of communities. 


Progressive organizations are among the non-government organizations now active  in mounting relief efforts, especially for an estimated tens of thousands stranded in their homes as the floods continue to rise, as well as those in cramped government-identified evacuation centers.


Announcements for a few of such efforts are found below. Those who can help are encouraged to do so in this time of grave need.



  






The international organization of overseas Filipinos, Migrante International, also called on families of OFWs as well as Filipinos abroad, to help in the relief efforts. Here is their announcement:

In the spirit of bayanihan, Migrante International and Migrante Partylist are calling on its chapters and members and OFWs around the world to raise funds in aid of families devastated by floods caused by continuous heavy rains.

Funds coursed through Sagip Migrante will be in support of rescue missions, distribution and delivery of essential goods such as rice, canned goods and bottled water, setting up of soup kitchens and other relief missions in affected areas.

Sagip Migrante is now open for monetary donations. Support in kind is also welcome; however, goods from overseas may not arrive in time.

All donations may be deposited to Sagip Migrante’s bank account.
