Nagkaisa ang mga mambabatas kapwa sa blokeng minorya at mayorya sa Kamara para harangin ang pagkaltas ng badyet sa 79 sa 110 state universities and colleges (SUCs) sa 2014 panukalang badyet.

Nanawagan din sila ng mas mataas na pondo para sa SUCs.

Sa isang press conference, pinangunahan ni Kabataan Rep. Terry Ridon ang pagkakaisa ng mahigit 20 miyembro ng Kamara, kasama ang iba’t ibang presidente ng SUCs, para pumirma sa manifesto of unity laban sa naturang budget cuts.

“We, lawmakers, administrators and concerned members of various sectors express our strong appeal for a sufficient budget increase for the qualitative functioning of our nation’s SUCs,” pahayag ng mga mambabatas.

Sa 2014 pambansang badyet na isinumite nito sa Kongreso, naglaan ang administrasyong Aquino ng PhP 34.7-Bilyon para sa SUCs. Pero sinasabi ng mga administrador ng SUCs na hindi sapat ang naturang badyet, at malayo ito sa mahigit PhP 60-B na orihinal na hinihingi ng 110 state schools.

Kabilang ang mga university systems tulad ng sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas at Mindanao State University sa nahaharap sa budget cuts na aabot sa PhP 3.3-B.

“Confronted with these issues, we call on members of Congress to not only restore the P3.3-billion budget removed from 79 of our SUCs, but also consider additional funding for all of our state schools by tapping and rechanneling various lump-sum allocations in the proposed 2014 budget,” sinabi pa ng mga mambabatas.

Sinabi ni Ridon na nangangalap pa sila ng karagdagang mga lagda mula sa mga mababatas at mga administrador ng iba pang SUCs.

Binasa ng naturang kongresista ng Kabataan Party-list ang unity statement sa plenaryo hinggil sa badyet ng SUCs.
Inilinaw ni Ridon na hindi lamang ang pagbalik sa kinaltas na pondo na Php 3.3-B sa 79 SUCs, kundi magtulak ng signipikanteng pagtaas sa badyet ng 110 SUCs.

“The government is always telling us that our country doesn’t have enough funds to provide for all the needs of our public higher education institutions. Yet recent revelations on lump-sum allocations and other pork funds tell otherwise. That’s why our call is for the immediate rechanneling of lump sum funds directly to social services, especially our underfunded SUCs,” pagtatapos ni Ridon.
