Manila, Philippines – More state personnel have been deployed to implement the swift burial of 1,400 corpses in Yolanda-hit city of Tacloban, Malacañang said yesterday.
Presidential Communications Operations Secretary Herminio Jr. said concerned government agencies are working closely with the city government of Tacloban to give the final rites for the dead typhoon victims.
More than a thousand dead victims reportedly lay unburied in a field in San Isidro, Tacloban, several weeks after the province was battered by super typhoon Yolanda. Residents have reportedly complained about the stench and other health hazards posed by the unburied typhoon victims.
“According to Secretary (Panfilo) Lacson, DOH (Department of Health), NBI (National Bureau of Investigation), and DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) are working closely with the Tacloban City Government to speed up the burial of some 1,400 bodies,” Coloma said in a Palace press briefing.
Lacson has been designated as the President’s assistant to supervise the relief and rebuilding efforts in Yolanda-hit communities.
Coloma said the Department of Health (DOH) has already sent 1,500 body bags and protective kits for personnel doing the work.
The DPWH has deployed additional backhoes and payloaders while the NBI has redeployed its forensic team on the ground, according to Coloma.
To speed up the burial of the dead, Coloma said authorities have modified the identification procedures of the corpses.
