THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENTS’ EDUCATIONAL
POLICIES IS DRIVING STUDENTS TO DEATH
The groups Ugnayan ng
Manggagawang Migrante Tungo sa Pag-unlad (UMANGAT) and Migrante Partylist (MPL)
Rome Chapter along with the OFWs in Rome, Italy is expressing their indignation
for the death of UP Manila Student Kristel Tejada’s demise. This is a sad and
outrageous moment for all students and their parents. The student has felt she
has lost the fight to realize the youth’s right to education,
The said student’s suicide exposes that the cost of
education in UP has become expensive for many and discriminates those who
cannot afford it, and mirrors the injustice of the present regime's policies in
cutting the budget for education and ineptness in the outrageous shortcomings
in the public Educational Programs for the youth.
We demand justice for
the death of the said student, let’s be unified in our call to repeal the Socialized Tuition and Financial Assistance
Program (STFAP) and the ‘Forced Leave of Absence (LOA) policy’ in UPM and the
tuition hike in 2006. In November 2012, the UPM administration barred students who
failed to pay tuition on time from being admitted to their classes. The said
students were eventually allowed to attend their classes after a dialogue with
UPM officials, but some students had already been forced to file for a LOA,
according to reports from the Office of the Student Regent (SR), that has driven many students and their
parents to despair. For this as we also make the Government and the UP
administration accountable for what happened.
STOP BUDGET CUTS FOR
EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SERVICES!
FOR THE YOUTH,
EDUCATION IS MORE THAN A RIGHT. IT IS ALSO THEIR LIFE!!!
JUSTICE FOR KRISTEL
TEJADA!!!
